China sourcing fair sold out

| Thursday, May 21, 2009

Global Sources, a leading B2B media company and a primary facilitator of trade with China, has said that its four upcoming China sourcing fairs in Dubai have sold out.

The China Sourcing will be held June 14 to 16 at the Dubai International Convention & Exhibition Centre.

The 2009 Dubai show ahs grown 40 per cent this year to reach over 1,100 booths, and will include gifts, premiums, home products, electronics and fashion accessories. The event will feature manufacturers from Greater China (mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan).

'Manufacturers from Greater China are actively looking for new markets and new customers in the Middle East, in part to counter the slowdown in the US and Europe,” said Sarah Benecke, Global Sources' executive director.

“Occupying six full exhibition halls, this will be our largest-ever Dubai shows and continues to be the largest exhibition of China products in the Middle East.'

The China Sourcing Fairs in Dubai serve importers and volume buyers in the Middle East, North Africa, India and Europe who seek high quality products from competitive Chinese suppliers. More than 7,100 buyers from 97 countries attended last year's event.

This year's event has attracted strong support from key manufacturing areas in mainland China, including the city of Jieyang in South China's Guangdong province, and the city of Yiwu in Zhejiang province.

Deputy general director of the department of foreign trade and economic cooperation of Guangdong province, Zhu Ze Nan said: 'We think the China Sourcing Fairs in Dubai are the perfect platform from which to reach new buyers throughout the Middle East. In today's economic environment, mainland China suppliers are actively looking to widen their customer base beyond North America and Europe.'

Located about two and a half hours from Shanghai, Yiwu is one of mainland China's leading manufacturing centers for home products, gifts, fashion accessories, and other items.

These suppliers have a long history of trading successfully with buyers throughout the Middle East, with a strong knowledge of regional customs and product appropriateness.

'Yiwu suppliers are looking more and more to the Middle East,' said Bill Janeri, Global Sources' Middle East general manager.

'The region has maintained solid economic growth that has driven demand for mainland China- made consumer goods. Companies from Yiwu are anxious to expand and strengthen their ties with buyers in the Middle East,' he added. – TradeArabia News Service.

3media Group Ltd, New Zealand’s largest privately owned B2B publishing company has been placed in receivership.

|

3media Group Ltd, New Zealand’s largest privately owned B2B publishing company has been placed in receivership.

The company has been for sale for the past three months prior to voluntary liquidation, but prospective buyers have had difficulty raising funds to purchase 3media’s relatively large portfolio of magazines, newsletters and industry award events, as stated by Gerry Rea, appointed as liquidator by the Bank of New Zealand.

The move to voluntary liquidation meant business as usual for the majority of 3media employees until the sale of the portfolio of business publications had been accomplished, however, on Tuesday, the company moved into receivership and soon after, 13 staff were dismissed. Staff has reportedly halved over the past year.

3media owns 15 monthly B2B magazines and newsletters and promotes and manages major industry events. In March it sold the iconic dairy industry magazine NZ Dairy Exporter to Country-Wide Publications.

On the Australian front, a recent poll by PublishingEdge which surveyed leading B2B publishing businesses revealed that the majority had shed staff, all were down in revenue from advertising sales – some over 50% compared to last year’s forward bookings at the same stage - and “not making money” as stated by most to PublishingEdge.

Another publisher has “shelved” several titles whilst others have reduced frequencies from monthly to bi-monthly, and in some cases to quarterly. With the major revenue stream for most B2B publishers coming from advertising and a limited amount from dwindling subscriptions, due to the controlled circulation nature of this sector. For a majority with limited liquidity it is a matter of survival.

Printers and fulfilment houses contacted by PublishingEdge are also witnessing reduced volumes and a blow-out in payment terms, reinforcing the tough times for this sector.

Alibaba steers small producers to home market

|

Alibaba.com, the world's leading business-to-business e-commerce services provider, has started to steer some of its member manufacturing companies to the domestic consumer market due to the lingering slowdown in exports.

Chairman Jack Ma Yun plotted that course over the weekend at the company-sponsored Online Merchant Trade Fair in Guangzhou, where it assisted 400 small and medium-sized manufacturers to connect with potential customers among Taobao's 30,000 merchant users.

Alibaba.com and Taobao, the mainland's largest consumer e-commerce firm, are both subsidiaries of Hangzhou-based Alibaba Group.

"The world is on the cusp of a new model that shifts power away from big business and gives it to consumers, small manufacturers and e-retailers," Mr Ma said.

Forming new relationships could help export manufacturers offset the temporary decline in demand from international markets by supplying their goods to domestic consumers, a situation that could also provide Taobao's top online merchants with new sources of quality goods, he said.

In the first quarter, the mainland's exports dropped 19.7 per cent to US$245.54 billion. The biggest decline came from Japan, falling 25.7 per cent, followed by Australia, with a decrease of 20.1 per cent.

Taobao, the largest internet retail portal on the mainland with more than 100 million registered users, is to share data on trend information on buyer queries and purchases made on its website to help Alibaba.com's member-manufacturers promptly meet market requirements.

Alibaba.com has about 32 million registered users on its Chinese business-to-business marketplace (Alibaba.com.cn), including more than 400,000 domestic suppliers.

A Morgan Stanley Research report said: "Alibaba.com is positioned as a one-stop shop to solve the bottlenecks for China's 40 million-plus small and medium-sized enterprises, the most robust growth engine for the country's economic boom."
